I almost miss out on the arguably king of all long wheel base vehicles in the Beijing Auto Show recently. It is none other than the Maybach limousine. So for its 2011 facelift, the Maybach gets a redesigned front bumper gets some extra trim, the new arrow-shaped hood gets snazzy edges and bigger, aerodynamic mirrors improve merging and now reduce driving noise.

Outside, the newish models will also feature more bling in the form of "a large new chrome radiator grille", LED daytime running lights, "high-quality dark red taillights", and "stylish wheels".

The grilles are unique to the two model lines (standard and "S"). Regular models will have 20 thin bars and S models get 12 thicker ones. Really made ponder on the need of those grill differentiation....

Inside, buyers will have access to wireless internet and a few new options including a perfume atomizer brought down from the Zeppelin model. For the short-wheelbase model, buyers can now request a reclining rear seat behind the front passenger. They can also order Swarovski crystal elements on the seat piping and some sterling silver "Maybach" compensation badges on the seats.

Last but definitely not least, power is also increased to 630 horsepower in the S models (up 18; standard models' output remains the same), and emissions drop to 368 g/km (350 g/km in non-S guise).

Ford Start Concept

The Ford Start Concept will be Ford’s Beijing International Auto Show show car. It looks like an Audi A1 and most likely previews a next generation Ford Ka type of car. It’s exterior shell is built with a lightweight composite and are snap-fitted onto an aluminium safety cell structure. It’s got laser-cut LED headlamps too.

“With the Ford Start Concept, we didn’t set out to design some sort of utilitarian concept to save the world, nor were we interested in following the competitive trend toward an overly noisy design language. What we did set out to do was design a personality driven car that exudes warmth, charm and aspiration – to design a car worth bonding with,” said J Mays, Group Vice President Design and Chief Creative Officer of the Ford Motor Company.

But most importantly it showcases a new 3-cylinder EcoBoost with 1.0 liter of displacement which delivers the power of a small 4-cylinder normally aspirated engine. Right now there are no power, torque or fuel consumption figures released for this engine but CO2 emissions are said to be under the 100g/km range. In the Start Concept, it is mated to a 6-speed transmission.

Li Nian is a newly formed brand from Honda's China branch, Guangqi Honda, formerly known as Guangzhou Honda. The brand has showed two other concept models in the past, a compact-sized crossover and a sporty roadster.

Honda said that a production version of the Li Nian concept will be introduced at China's Guangzhou Motor Show, scheduled at the end of this year, but did not release any more details on the car. However, we suspect that it is closely based on the City, a small sedan itself based on the Jazz platform.

The MG Concept zero which went public at the 2010 beijing Auto Show may very well represent SAIC owned MG's an upcoming production model in the supermini segment -most likely called MG3- that could go on sale in China first and then in Europe as early as next year.

Press release gave great emphasis on the fact that the Zero Concept was developed by MG’s Global Design team led by British MG Design Director Anthony Williams-Kenny who is based in Birmingham.

The Zero Concept is compact concept which is 4 meters in length and is expected to feature small displacement engines both normally-aspirated and force-inducted if it goes into production. A report by ChinaCarTimes revealed that it could be sold in China as the Roewe 150 or the MG2 joining the MG TF and the MG6 which will be launched in the UK by the end of this year.

The Chevrolet Volt MPV5 crossover concept rolled silently out of the gates during the 2010 China Auto Show.

The Volt MPV5 measures 4,585mm long, 1,871mm wide and 1,612mm tall. It rides on a 2,760mm wheelbase, which is only 15mm longer than the wheelbase of the Chevrolet Volt.

As expected, the concept features an electric motor with 111 kW (150 hp / 152 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. The 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack allows the MPV5 to travel up to 51.5 km (32 miles) on electricity alone. When the battery is depleted, a 1.4-liter engine recharges the battery while simultaneously providing power to the electric motor. This enables the MPV5 to have a range of 482 km (300 miles). While detailed performance specifications weren't released, the MPV5 has a top speed 160 km/h (100 mph).

According to Doug Parks, GM's Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles, "The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept."

Mercedes-Benz is not going loose out to its German rivals namely Volkswagen and Audi in satisfying the Chinese's voracious appetite for elongated luxury sedans. Hence they launched the Mercedes-Benz E-Class long wheelbase exclusively for the China Market.

Wearing the E 300 L badge, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class long wheelbaseoffers 14 centimeters more leg room for the rear cabin and the front seats can be controlled by the rear passengers. The ground clearance has grown slightly as well. The 245hp E 300 is also joined by the 204hp E 260 CGI. This E 260 CGI ELEGANCE comes with things like bi-xenon headlights, Intelligent Light System, electric sliding sunroof as well as Mercedes’ COMMAND DVD system.

The AVANTGARDE version of the E 260 has panoramic sunroof, COMMAND APS with DVD changer, THERMATIC air conditioning system and heated rear seats. If you opt for the E 300 you will go home with a Rear Seat Entertainment System with two LCD screens fitted on rear part of the front headrests as well as a keyless system.

The cars will be assembled in China by Beijing Benz Automotive Corporation which is joint-venture between Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Company (BAIC) and Mercedes-Benz.

BMW is showing off their latest design study, the BMW Concept Gran Coupe, at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in China.

The Concept Gran Coupe is a four door sedan, but the B pillar is hidden. There are traces of previous concept cars in the design as well – the tail lamp internal lense design is similiar to the one on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics although on that car it was a floating design and on the Concept Gran Coupe it is enclosed inside a tail lamp.

At 1.4-meters high, the car is 10-cm shorter in height than the 5er and 7er sedan. Current rumors suggest that the car is already approved for production and will be marketed as the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, a car which BMW does not directly compete against at this time.
