Peugeot has found a new home for its HYbrid4 technology that independently powers the front and rear wheels with two types of powertrains. It's called through-the-road hybrid technology and it makes its latest appearance in the just-unveiled HR1 concept. According to Peugeot, The HR1 is part small city car, part SUV-ish beast and and part coupĂ© – and it's an aggressive little thing. To match the crowded city where it's intended to be used, the HR1 uses scissor doors that open vertically – and the it's is taller than you might expect, with the driver up high in a "dominant driving position."

All this steroid-like aggression doesn't extend to the powertrains, though, since the HR1 concept boasts numbers that are quite kind to the environment: 81 miles per gallon (64 mpg U.S.) and CO2 emissions of just 80 grams per kilometer. The frugality comes from a new, three-cylinder 1.2-liter THP 110 gas engine that is used to power the front wheels. In the back, the HYbrid4's through-the-road hybrid powertrain uses a 37-bhp electric motor.

What is it about auto show halls that brings out this sort of magic? Yes, we know Peugeot is bringing a HYbrid4 3008 to market, but that car "only" gets 61.9 miles per gallon (U.S.) and spews a comparatively monstrous 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4

Peugeot's first production hybrid is finally coming to market next spring. The 3008 Hybrid4 is the first light-duty diesel hybrid to come to market and also the first through-the-road hybrid. The midsize crossover uses a system that consists of a fairly conventional 163-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-four diesel engine driving the front wheels and a 37-horsepower electric motor at the rear axle that operates completely independently of the internal combustion drivetrain.

The diesel drives through an electronically controlled and mechanized six-speed manual gearbox that can either be shifted manually or left in full automatic mode. A more powerful eight-kilowatt high-voltage integrated starter-generator on the engine provides automatic start-stop capability as well as the ability to charge the nickel metal hydride battery from the engine.

When the battery has sufficient charge, the electric motor alone can propel the 3008 at lower speeds or provide on-demand all-wheel drive. The rear-mounted motor also provides regenerative braking to charge the battery. The combined output of the two powerplants comes in at 200 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. The mechanically simpler (compared to most parallel hybrids) system allows Peugeot to produce a less expensive diesel hybrid than would be possible with a power-split system like the one used by Toyota, all while taking advantage of the highway cruising efficiency of compression ignition. The 3008 Hybrid4 is rated at 61.9 miles per gallon (U.S.) on the EU combined driving cycle with CO2 emissions of just 99 grams per kilometer. Eventually, Peugeot will also add a plug-in version of Hybrid4 with a lithium-ion battery.

Peugeot 308 GTi

Sitiing above the Peugeot 308 Gt, the range topping 308 GTi comes with the same power plant found under the hood of the RCZ 2+2 Coupe.

The 1.6 liter engine with twin-scroll turbo and direct injection makes 200 bhp and 275 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 4,500 rpm. This enable the 308 Gti to to do the benchmark 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds when paired to a six-speed manual transmission.

What’s really impressive is the fuel consumption, which is rated at 14.5 km/l in the combined cycle. The 200 THP engine is built with Sound System technology, which delivers different harmonics according to vehicle acceleration. This is from a vibrating membrane controlled and amplified by an acoustic duct – quiet when it’s supposed to be, louder when you’re pressing on.

Chassis wise, the GTi’s front suspension gets joints with larger diameter bearings derived from platform 3 (C/D segment) and specific damper settings with particular attention paid to the uprated front units (22 mm damper rods compared to 20 mm). The GTi rides on 18-inch alloys (same design as GT) with 225/40 tyres.

Inside, sporty features include an aluminium foot rest and gear knob, leather steering wheel with slightly flattened lower edge and piano black fascia. All these are present in the RCZ, as is a more modern and integrated layout for the stereo system.
